Our World is Becoming Smaller
(As Our Chapter Becomes Larger)
HFMA Georgia Chapter New Member Profiles
By: James Betts

One of the things that caught my attention while researching this brief article was the diversity of the new members’ jobs. They come from a broad range of organizations and locations, perhaps reflecting the increasing interdependence of the health care industry.

Along with new members representing more traditional providers like hospitals and physician practices, there are also those affiliated with IPAs, and specialty physician groups. There are a large number of new members from companies who serve the provider community. These organizations provide shared services, software, asset management, consulting, and financial services, among many others.

Another sign of our diverse new membership is the former homes of our recent transfer members. Members from Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas have recently joined us.

Here are profiles of four new members:

Barry Carter is Corporate Vice President for Finance for Shared Services Healthcare Inc. of Atlanta. Shared Services Healthcare is a member-owned group purchasing organization. Barry came to work for them in July of 1997, after being affiliated with Health Images, Inc.

Barry’s management responsibilities include payroll, accounting, general ledger, information technology and human resources. He sees one of his new challenges as providing Shared Services members with increasing access to information regarding contracts and products.

Lillian Livengood is Senior Financial Analyst for Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta. Egleston is a 235 (licensed) bed hospital. From her office in Decatur, she is responsible for financial statement presentations and special financial projects. She has been in this position about one year.

Supporting the new Egleston/Scottish Rite Healthcare System’s financial systems is also one of her primary activities at this time.

Lillian is not strictly a new member, having been a part of the Georgia Chapter until 1996 while she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Augusta.

Greg Johnson is Vice President for Professional Services at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. Colquitt is a 155 (licensed) bed hospital in Moultrie, Georgia. He has been with the organization for 11 years. Prior to this he was associated with the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Augusta.

His areas of responsibility include EMS, Emergency Department, Laboratory, Surgery, Anesthesia, Outpatient Surgery, Chemical Oncology, and Neurology, among others. He is a board member of South Georgia Healthcare Partners, and a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Greg’s strategic activities for the immediate future include providing state-of-the-art health care to a rural population.

Rebecca (Becky) Brister transferred to our chapter from the Colorado Chapter, HFMA. She is Controller of 40 bed Monroe County Hospital in Forsyth, Georgia. She arrived here in January 1998, after working for a hospital in Durango, Colorado and also for a large accounting and consulting firm.

She is responsible for a wide variety of financial functions. Her immediate goals include networking with other small hospitals to identify new opportunities.

I encourage you to take the opportunity to meet these and other new members at chapter functions. Their experience and talents will be valuable to us as individuals and to the chapter.
