Why Do We Need CPAR?

Ive heard a lot of people wonder, whats the big deal about CPAR? Why does the Georgia Chapter make such a big to-do over it? Is it a revenue producing function of the local chapter? Well, maybe it is. Does it promote HFMA and the local chapter? Sure it does, think of all the members who were brought in through passing the CPAR exam. Does it offer anything to the employers as well as the people who take the test? A resounding - yes it does!
If you are out there, and are asking "Why CPAR?" think about this . . . Are you a manager who requires excellence from your staff and yourself? If so, examine those who are willing to commit to studying and preparing for the better part of 4 or more months for the CPAR exam. It definitely demonstrates a desire by that person to advance and excel in the healthcare industry, not to mention the knowledge they will now bring to their department at your facility. As stated by the high scorer for the 1997 exam, Fannie Robbins, "Dont just depend on the current knowledge that you have." Without expanding a persons level of knowledge regarding the ever-changing healthcare industry, it would be impossible for them maintain a knowledge base to effectively and accurately perform their job function. CPAR gives an individual the exposure to a broad range of subject matters that are vital for the success of their healthcare facility and daily work activity. CPAR encompasses the major insurance providers (Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross and TriCare), Georgia-based programs, Billing (UB-92 and HCFA 1500) and gives an in-depth look into the admission / registration and collection aspect of a hospital business office. The training material is updated yearly to provide the most current and accurate information to assist individuals with their job.
Again this year, the CPAR committee will continue to set their goals on achieving excellence. The CPAR committee will again distribute the Managers Resource Packet including sample test and daily pop quizzes that will challenge managers and the participants knowledge of the study material. Coaching sessions will be held strategically throughout the state as in prior years so everyone will be given the opportunity to attend. CPAR Day will be offered again at the Spring Institute to provide educational sessions for CPAR Graduates.
This is going to be a banner year for CPAR, and I hope you will encourage and support your staff to participate in the CPAR program. The rewards and benefits are countless.
